Hub Fun 2019

Posted by Dirck on 23 September, 2019

I was going to be all entertaining for this entry, but that’s before insomnia struck. It struck my son, but the effect on me is the same since sleep is knits up no sleaves when there’s a very happy boy quietly reciting whole episodes of his favourite shows (aware that turning on the iPad would be unfair to his parents) and giggling at the memory of some of the sight-gags which accompanied.

So. It was jolly fun, for the definition of “fun” specific to we who enjoy fountain pens to a strange degree, and since I’m not up to stringing a LOT of words together, let me rely on the power of captioned photos.

My writing enterprise refers to “living skies” of which this is an example, although a mild and inviting variant as befits a happy night.

Turning around, and taking advantage of the “magic hour” light film-makers rave so much about, let’s show you all this Paper Umbrella place which I so often refer to– the venue for the night’s diversion.

One of the proprietors is a calligrapher.

My lineup for the night, arranged with labels so those inclined to give them a try would know what they held. I brought neither the most, the most expensive, nor the oldest.

Under the banner of the hub. I’ll likely get in trouble for this, as I have no photo waivers from any of these people. The Hubmaster is the fellow in the green shirt at the left.

“Are only Pelikan pens allowed?” NO! As my own suite attests, non-Pelikans appear, and someone even brought this extremely traditional pen; I think the manufacturer is Goose.

Some of the other not-Pelikans which attended, with representatives from the 1920s right up to fresh and new, as well as most stops along the road from cheap to rather expensive (nothing ludicrously costly appeared… unlike last year).

The Pelikan Hub Gift Bag, full of stuff from Pelikan to gladden the heart. My wife got the bottle of Ink of the Year, as it’s a colour she much prefers; I’m content with having been at the event. And also the magazine. And the other stuff.

That’s it. I’m already looking forward to next year. Although, to be honest, what I’m looking more forward to is bedtime tonight.

The Big Day is Upon Us!

Posted by Dirck on 20 September, 2019

For those who care about such things, I’ll be liberally plastering my Instagram account (mostly stuff I cooked, some cats, surprisingly few pens) with the Pelikan Hub as it unfolds, although I’ll likely also do an after-action report on Monday here so people who dislike that particular avenue of social media don’t have to deal with it.

I don’t recall if I showed that one before. I don’t think I did, because surely if I had I’d remember pondering the wisdom of leading with “The clip looks like a bird’s face! COOL, HUH?!” I mean, I like it, but it’s well down my own list of reasons for liking the brand.

Today’s beaky pen: Pelikan 140
Today’s ink: Jentle blue-black

Who Says Germans are Dour?

Posted by Dirck on 19 September, 2019

Oh, you know the stereotype; cool, efficient, probably wearing a black turtleneck.

Stereotypes, man. I should be wearing a lot more flannel, according to international concepts of my nation.

Now, the usual Thursday entry, which will display what an atypical week this has been in more ways than one. It’s not just the impending Pelikan Hub that has kept me from my usual industry– there’s been a lot of stupid demands on my time this week, and they rendered me dull or incapable of using my free time as I would wish. This was, by the way, AFTER choices of ink were made– that degree of dull unoriginality happens without any outside influence, and with a huge array of bottles from several brands all laid out in front of me.

Plenty for Everyone!

Posted by Dirck on 17 September, 2019

While this particular example is both funny and speaks to a personal inclination, I’m not a fan of the type.

They make plenty of them! It’s not even a fountain pen! LEARN TO SHARE!

Today’s pen, which you may use it you ask nicely (and I’ll just hold onto the cap): Pelikan M30
Today’s ink, available by the bucketful: Diamine Marine

COUNTDOWN BEGINS!

Posted by Dirck on 16 September, 2019

Pelikan Hub is this Friday! As a result, I’m going to clutter my space up with even more free advertising for that company than they’d expect, because if you can’t have a little fun with the efforts to wring money out of you, you’re probably not aware that they’re efforts to wring money out of you.

I will admit, if I lived in Germany, my son would be getting a LOT more of that kind of thing pressed upon him by his easily-led but well-meaning father.

Today’s pen (the start of a week of Pelikan): Pelikan New Classic
Today’s ink (less bound by brand loyalty): Diamine Bilberry

(No) Planes, Trains (Hopefully) and Automobiles

Posted by Dirck on 28 June, 2019

I am trembling on the very precipice of my summer vacation, even as I type. Since I schedule it to coincide with Son’s birthday, I hope the weather will allow us to ride a relatively nearby steam engine; it can run in the rain, but won’t because not everyone is as dedicated as the lad when it comes to this kind of fun. There was a time, though, that catching a train was considered to be worth all kinds of effort…

As is usual for my time off, I’ll likely neglect matters here pretty vigorously. There will be a new story appearing next week on my place for that kind of thing, but that’s likely to be the extent of my attention to my online presence. Domestic bliss and domestic shoveling, some writing, and a whole lot of not Regular Job. There’s apt to be the odd gin and tonic, too.

Today’s pen: Lamy 2000

Today’s ink: Edelstein Olivine

BONUS SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT! Regina is over the minimum number of participants for Pelikan Hubs 2019, so there will be one here! Something to look forward to! In fact, looking at the map, Saskatoon will be in on the fun as well this year, and every province except Nova Scotia and Newfoundland-Labrador have a mark, which makes me feel all cosmopolitan and citizen-of-the-world-ish.

Hub! Hub! Hurrah!

Posted by Dirck on 13 June, 2019

I appear to have had a stunning lapse in my brain function, as I have not clambered onto the rooftop of this enterprise to shout about the opening of registration for this year’s Pelikan Hub… and now there’s barely more than two weeks before the deadline!

Yes, I am making free with a fragment from this year’s Pelikan Fine Writing catalogue.

So, drop whatever you’re doing and go to the sign-up page! If that link doesn’t work, try getting there through this page, but by all means, get yourself registered. There’s goodies given away, and you can spend an evening hanging around with people who really like pens. It was hoot last year.

I am, of course, talking most specifically to people in the area of Regina, because I’m anxious that last year’s hoot not be a one-time event. But certainly, wherever you dwell, dear reader, get thee registered.

Thematic

Posted by Dirck on 19 October, 2018

I am, at least as far as my weekly pen choices go, still riding high on the effects of the Pelikan Hub (and not, despite the yawning gulf of three whole days of legalization in Canada, any cannabis products). Here’s a video which shows the virtues of some older Pelikans, even if what is said about them is slightly obscure.

I think, if I’m remembering the Hub correctly, I handled a 120 of the pre-Merz & Krell sort which had previously been owned by this chap. Which is neither here nor there on the pen’s virtues– it’s more of a “small world” observation.

Today’s pen: Pelikan M600
Today’s ink: Edelstein Olivine (part of the pelf from the Hub, and for which I must finish a profile page for before too much more time goes by)

Ready for the BIG DAY

Posted by Dirck on 21 September, 2018

Here we are, the day at last.  As I write this, it’s a little over five hours to the local Pelikan Hub 2018.  First, I answer yesterday’s question about what I might take along:

Old and new, top-end and popular, all bundled into one conveyance.

I started to do this in chronological order, but then forgot a couple and decided to just press on rather than start again. That M30 sure stands out, eh?

Pelikan heavy, of course, but not 100% birds.  I might even grab a couple of others in the brief window between work and hub, just for giggles.

For today’s film, I thought I might find something whimsical involving the actual bird. The very first one that came up in the search involved a pelican in a park in Germany devouring a pigeon. This sounds amusing in the abstract, but… not what I want here. So, we revert to pens; here’s someone who isn’t me showing off a duplicate of one of the pens I’m taking along tonight.

…and now I’m worried someone will try to test the limits of my pen’s flex. I hope I’m not the final panel in an Alex Norris cartoon later tonight.

Today’s pen, which has never eaten a pigeon: Pelikan New Classic
Today’s ink: Pelikan Black

Day What How Much Pen Ink
  • 17 September
  • 18 September
  • 19 September
  • 20 September
  • Second draft of “Kick a Cat…”
  • 2815 typed words

Those who were paying attention for about four hours yesterday will have seen a gestational version of this post– apparently somebody hit POST rather than SAVE yesterday. I will put this down to mental exhaustion– the rowers are all present on their benches now, but the guy in the jerkin keeps banging away on his drum.

Tonight is going to be full of powerful mental activity: choosing and inking pens for tomorrow’s Pelikan Hub! The New Classic is definitely coming along. I think one of the P1s will, too, and some of the less-known (at least around here) cheap moderns– I know the local hubmaster is bringing a plentiful selection of Souveräns for other attendees to ogle, and my thing has always been breadth of collection rather than depth.  Still, I’ll likely bring my own M600 along, because it would be mean to not take it to a party meant for it.

I may also bring some not-Pelikans, too, just to keep accusations of favouritism down a little.
