Fun in Darkness

Posted by Dirck on 19 February, 2021

So… short week, huh? I had forgotten that little fact entirely pretty much from lunch-time Tuesday through to head hitting the pillow last night. Thus, no update yesterday. I’ll take it on to the bottom of this entry. There’s not much difference to last week, as my tubes are still clogged, although I did have a couple of revelations in the direction of rehabilitating some things suffering from their author’s white male POV, one of which is that novel I spent so long on.

But first, the fun stuff. What’s the most fun you can have in a dark room? Watching old movies, of course! I recently read a tweet from someone who was very disappointed, after a lifetime of watching films no older than 1980 (I think that was the arbitrary cut-off– possibly 1970), by the experience of watching Citizen Kane.

Oh, really? Only the barest understanding of the language, and you found the lecture boring?

I, happily, understand the language of old films (even if I sometimes make fun of their tropes), and it troubles me that so many people dismiss them out of hand.

So, today’s jollity– a film to help you understand the language, and someone else making fun of old film tropes.

Now, here’s that disappointing update:

  • Faffing about.
  • Less than I could have wished, again.
  • A great deal too much.

The faffing about has been necessary, but… well, it’s hard to apply resolution to pry up an edge of writing block when rushing out to get necessary household items.

On the silver lining side, I have no deadlines, so the lack of output isn’t causing actual trouble to anyone else.

I guess that makes it official– writer’s block. I’m going to try to shift it by reading a pile of good stories over the weekend.

  • Why people gotta want stuff?
  • An unsatisfying stub, a real page (the 487) and some behind the scenes stuff.

There was also a little bit of glowing at the news that a story has been held for closer editorial consideration. That’s labour intensive, that is.

New Year’s Dissolutions

  • Worrying
  • Probably more than I need to

I am NOT getting enough sleep. I know this because I decided to pack it in at 10:30 New Year’s Eve, having had roughly 15ml of whisky, and rose at 9:00 the next morning. And then the same for the next two nights. Part of it is the effect of the season on melatonin production, I’m sure, but explaining it doesn’t fix it.

There’s also the regime change happening in the wild and lawless country across our southern border. If you’re reading this in the distant future, run a search for 6 January US Capitol Siege. I don’t imagine you’ll have to specify a year. Between that ongoing blitheration and my province’s thumbless handling of COVID, in both the pre-vaccine and vaccine-newly-made phases, it’s not surprising the slumber is shallow and evasive.

I’ve been mentioning over previous entries that I’m having a bit of trouble with the fiction output, and that’s almost certainly down to all of the above. Apart from going to bed shortly after 8:00 as a new habit (and, ideally, politics at all levels having a sudden, lasting undumbening), I don’t really have a good solution.

My not very good solution is to give next week’s writing periods over to updating my site, as I’ve got some new pens that should be given their place of prominence. My previous approach to updates no longer applies, as the idle time offered by The Regular Job has dwindled to nearly nothing, so this seems a good solution. It’s also going to involve scraping words out of my head, without having to (entirely) invent the world they describe, and hopefully that will prime my pump.

I should, since a year ago I was rattling on about depression, mention that the sleepiness is no more than than. The magic brain pills continue to do their work, and while I may do so with a yawn, I am taking joy from the world. I’m fairly anxious to share last Monday’s pen with the world, because its filling mechanism is ridiculous. I have a pen on the way that entirely ate the payment I got for “Palmer’s Folly” because until I’m getting more than a couple of piece published a year, that money is to allow frivolity in my life.

And that’s it for this week. Nothing spooled up in the film department, but I’m sure my pursuit of frivolity on a tight budget will return that feature to our programming line-up soon.

† I probably should have posted something during the time away, but the very concepts of time and duty lost all meaning in a bubble-fied nuclear family-only Christmas. The effect on my inward state was such that to apologize for the lapse would be to seem ungrateful.

  • Getting some of the power attendant to my new place as a director for the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guide made available.
  • Flogging the thing below.
  • But not a lot because…
  • Banks, man– too much.
  • All over the place

SO, the big news for this week, which I lift entire from my other enterprise:

I’ll mention that the image on the cover… does not represent my contribution, I will say… although “Wilden Klausen” does involve wearing a costume for a seasonal tradition.

I should also mention that the profits for this collection are going to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which given the situation of the world over the last… dozen or two months, at least… seems like a service which could definitely use some funding. Since I’m not in the US, I will mention for those who wish to give directly that there is a Canadian version of the same thing.

Here is a link to pre-order; it will be released on 20 December.

† Rest assured that I will be slathering links around the place when the next issue goes live. Yes, another story of mine is getting publication. It actually sold quite some time ago, but I thought it best to keep it sub rosa it was about to come to full ripeness.

And I nearly stuck with that, too.

  • Second draft of “Hobb’s Landing”.
  • Um…†

† This is a tricky question, given that I’m usually changing from hand-written to compu-typed in the second draft, but this time it’s all the latter. This means that I wasn’t keeping track of the amount of change happening, and since it’s add-remove-replace-add-move the quantitative difference from beginning to end it almost meaningless.

But I got some work done, for a change.

I had thought to get some writing done yesterday, but I put all my creative into getting pictures of pens and ink bottles all prettied up for the site, of which the only visible effect is the functional link to Namiki inks above.
