Midway… almost

Posted by Dirck on 27 July, 2018

We’re not quite at the central point between Valentine’s Day and Hallowe’en, but I think today’s film inclines slightly more toward the latter anyway.

For amateur profilers– this is the sort of thing I consider “whimsically charming.”  I should share it with my wife, although I suspect she’ll find the fight scenes a little protracted.

Today’s pen: Faber-Castell e-motion
Today’s ink: Herbin Pousièrre de Lune

Day What How Much Pen Ink
  • 24 July
  • 25 July
  • 26 July
  • 27 July
  • First draft of “A Legion of Candles”
  • 19 manuscript pages.

Two quick notes:

  1. The page count is low because I got robbed of today’s writing session through the requirements of having to live a life in modern society (more specifically, dealing with car repairs).
  2. I swapped Parkers but not ink, because I was weary of the 45 but the cartridge I filled for it was far from empty. If you’ve several nice pens at hand, there’s no call to tolerate one that isn’t attending to its duty.

Oh, right–

3. The 45 is going into the workshop this weekend; I’m not going to leave it in a semi-functional state.

News: Pelikan Hubs 2018 By The Numbers

Posted by Dirck on 24 July, 2018

I’m not given to the REBLOG button, but all I wanted to do was point out this material about the Pelikan Hubs. The final number for Regina is 14, which is not only more than Winnipeg, it’s more than Amsterdam, which is a great big metropolitan city!

The Pelikan's Perch

With the closing of the registration period (extended an extra week due to high demand), we now have a pretty good sense of Pelikan’s Hub locations for 2018 as well as the number of registrations at each location.  The analysis that follows is derived from data taken from Pelikan’s Hubs page (as of 7/23/18 at 9:00pm EST) and should not be taken as absolute since it is subject to some fluctuation between now and the big event.  Still, it gives us a significant insight into how this fifth anniversary event is shaping up.  Most of the cities that participated last year are again included in this year’s festivities with at least two dozen new cities added to the roster, a roughly 23% increase.  The Hubs event continues the steady trend in annual growth that we’ve seen year after year.  Each year has been larger than the one before with more…

Summer Blockbuster

Posted by Dirck on 20 July, 2018

The Friday film is a very silly one this week, and appears here mainly because I am a bit of a Fillion fan-boy.

I will repeat here an objection I frequently air when watching action films– cars, including Jeeps, are not immune to small-calibre weapons fire. My disbelief can only suspend so hard, especially after the window stunt.

Today’s pen: Waterman C/F
Today’s ink:  Waterman Blue (vintage)

Day What How Much Pen Ink
  • 18 July
  • 19 July
  • 20 July
  • 21 July
  • Second draft of “Until Regrets Take the Place of Dreams”
  • 2,826 words typed, and that’s done.

Also, just a small note which I want to leave a future me in case he’s feeling blue– I got a rejection today which, while still a rejection, contained an expression of interest in other stories; it was simply the tone/specific theme of the story that drew the rejection, while the writing was good enough to intrigue. It’s a small thing, but it’s buoyant and worth clinging to.

What’s All the Hub-bub About the Hub, Bub?

Posted by Dirck on 16 July, 2018

Hey, I’m back!  And I’m making noise now rather than on Thursday because Thursday is only three days before the end of the extended deadline for Pelikan Hub sign-up! Pelikan, perhaps concerned with the small turn-out in Bremen, announced that they were keeping registrations open until the 22nd, so if you haven’t and you want to, go sign up! I notice that it still says the 16th on the site, but press on.

While i’m here making noise, I’ll mention what I got up to on the vacation apart from lavishing time and attention on my son. First, I had a chance to work on a Waterman sleeve-filler:

It’s not… necessarily… the oldest pen I’ve worked on, but it is definitely in the running, and it’s the first time I was in the same room as this mechanism.

Also, if you cast your minds back to the winter of 2014-15, you’ll remember that I was scraping away at a choose-your-own-cosmic-horror game. I have been working on a lot of other stuff since, mainly because it’s something I can’t work at anywhere except home, and home is full of other demands upon my time.  Well, I managed to get about 8,000 words of second draft bashed out on it in two sessions last week.  This means, judging by the stacks of paper in the done and waiting piles, that I’m about 30% finished that project. I’m thinking of giving up on sleep recovery on the weekends for a while, in hopes of actually getting it into a beta-reader shape at least. It has sat fallow long enough.

I also cleaned out a pen with a mold problem so bad that air couldn’t pass through the feed.  Ug. This pen, I hasten to point out, is not mine, but lest that sound judgemental I will also point out that ink contamination may come into all our lives, regardless of how cleanly our habits.

Today’s hygienic pen: TWSBI Classic
Today’s (as yet) unsullied ink: Diamine Marine Blue
