Blue is the New Cement

Posted by Dirck on 2 May, 2011

I have a very nice little Sheaffer Balance in the house.  It’s marine green, its plating is essentially intact, the ink window is only just ambered, the point is the correct shape, and the feed is undamaged by its years in the world.  The only thing that keeps it from being usable, indeed delightful, is a hardened sac.

And after some hours of trying to fix that problem, it remains exactly the same.  It resists me, thus far successfully.

There are two possibilities.  Possibility number one is that some twit of ages past glued the section into the barrel, and this could be a very serious problem.  Possibility number two is… ink.

I have run into this sort of thing in the past– ink escaping from containment gets into the joint and really gums things up.  Eventually, soaking it will get it loose.  Right?  I hope so, although a whole weekend of soaking and dunking in an ultrasonic cleaner has yet to do the trick.

Just before I sign off, I’ll apologize for the rather sketchy and unsatisfying nature of today’s entry.  I’m distracted by the federal election taking place today (which I’m trying to affect via sympathetic magic– thus the one-day change to an orange colour scheme), and can’t really settle to any other topic.  I’ll be better tomorrow unless I’m too despondent to rise from my bed.

Today’s pen: Parker Vacumatic
Today’s ink: Herbin’s Éclat du Saphir
